You can get a gig 3-D printing lungs

United Therapeutics plans to use a 3-D printer to manufacture human lungs in “unlimited quantities,” and it’s hiring for some unique roles to do it.
Some background: Bioprinting isn’t a new idea: 3-D printers can already make human skin and retinas. But the method has been limited to tissues that are small or thin and lack blood vessels.
What’s different this time? United is developing a printer that it believes, within a few years, will be able to manufacture a detailed outline of a lung made of collagen (see the printer in action here). That’s a long way from a working organ, though, so United is developing ways to impregnate the matrix with cells that will bring it to life.
Staffing up: United hired a South Carolina company, 3D Systems, to build the printer and is paying another firm, 3Scan, to slice up lungs and create detailed maps of their interior. To take it to the next level, it has job ads out for roles like “Mathematician—Human Organ Design.”
What skills do you need? The ideal candidate has a degree in mathematics, computer science, electrical engineering, or a related field, a knowledge of a variety of coding languages and design software, and skills in algorithm development. Previous experience 3-D printing organs is a plus.
