A new DARPA research program is developing brain-computer interfaces that could control “swarms of drones, operating at the speed of thought”. What if it succeeds? Paul Tullis investigates.
The aim is to eventually develop accurate and sensitive brain-computer interfaces that can be put on and taken off like a helmet or headband—no surgery required. For now, that doesn’t exist—and it’s seriously hard to develop. But if the researchers behind it succeed, the results will be transformative. It would open up a world of possibilities: letting veterans who lost limbs to control artificial ones, and even one day allowing soldiers to control weapons with just their minds.
